East Delhi's schools are organised around the Blue Line metro, the district's main corridor. From Laxmi Nagar in the west to Anand Vihar in the east, every major cluster sits within walking distance of a station, so the whole district is commutable for the school run.

Mayur Vihar (Phases 1, 2 and 3)

The district's premium zone. DDA-planned with wider roads and green spaces, Mayur Vihar has East Delhi's strongest concentration of schools. Phase 1 is the most established, with 20-year-plus track records, while Phases 2 and 3 are newer and growing fast.

Schools here also compete with Noida across the DND Flyway, which keeps quality and accountability high.

Preet Vihar and Nirman Vihar

The stable mid-range core of East Delhi. Colonies developed in the 1970s and 80s, with schools that have served the same neighbourhoods for decades, so board results and teacher reputations are common knowledge. Blue Line stations keep commutes under 15 minutes to most of the district.

IP Extension and Patparganj

IP Extension is a large DDA colony with solid CBSE schools in a quiet, planned setting and good road access. Patparganj serves both residential and industrial communities, well-connected by the Pink Line and close to Mayur Vihar.

Laxmi Nagar, Shakarpur and Krishna Nagar

The commercial heart of East Delhi and the city's coaching capital for CA, CLAT, banking and competitive exams. Schools here run alongside one of the densest coaching ecosystems in the country, and the nearby Krishna Nagar and Gandhi Nagar belt adds a large cluster of budget and mid-range schools.

The parent community is education-focused and value-conscious. Schools that do not produce results do not hold enrolment for long.

Anand Vihar, Karkardooma and Vivek Vihar

The eastern stretch, anchored by the Anand Vihar transport hub. Residential colonies with mid-range school options and growing demand, all linked by the Blue Line.

Which boards are available

CBSE is the default in East Delhi, with roughly nine in ten private schools affiliated to it. That suits families planning around board exams and entrance tests like JEE, NEET and CUET.

A small number of ICSE schools run in Mayur Vihar and Preet Vihar. IB and IGCSE are not present in the district, so families who want them look to South Delhi or to Noida, which is within commuting distance of Mayur Vihar.

Fee landscape

East Delhi delivers strong results at fees that run 40 to 60 per cent below South Delhi for comparable quality.

Transport, books, uniform and activity charges usually add another 30 to 50 per cent over the quoted tuition, so compare the total annual cost, not just the monthly headline.

The Noida factor

East Delhi parents face a choice unique to this district: Noida schools are a genuine alternative.

Families in Mayur Vihar Phases 2 and 3, and parts of Patparganj, can reach Noida Sectors 15 to 28 in 15 to 20 minutes over the DND Flyway or the Kalindi Kunj bridge. Several Noida schools offer larger, newer campuses at comparable or slightly higher fees.

That cross-border competition is real, so East Delhi's premium schools cannot rely on location alone.

Metro connectivity

The district runs mainly on two metro lines.

• Blue Line is the main corridor, with stations at Laxmi Nagar, Nirman Vihar, Preet Vihar, Karkardooma and Anand Vihar, continuing to Noida and Vaishali.
• Pink Line connects through Mayur Vihar Pocket 1 and Trilokpuri to South Delhi and the rest of the network.

The Anand Vihar interchange ties together the Blue Line, the Pink Line, the inter-state bus terminal and a railway station, making the eastern end a major transit hub. Nearly every significant school sits within walking distance of a Blue Line station.

How admission works

Private schools in East Delhi follow the Directorate of Education's points-based system for nursery admission, with neighbourhood proximity as the key factor.

The cycle is the standard Delhi one: forms in November and December, applications in January, lists in February, session from April.

Because the district is so dense with schools, most families have several realistic options inside their proximity zone, so it is practical to apply to five to seven schools.
