chevron_right About Schools in Rai
Rai is Sonipat's NCR-facing block, with more than 120 private schools and almost all of the district's boarding capacity.
It runs from Kundli, sitting directly on the Delhi border beside Narela, north-east along NH-44 and the Meerut road through Bahalgarh, Khewra and Palri Kalan, where the largest campuses are.
This is where families from north-west Delhi look when they want a big campus without Delhi pricing, and where Sonipat's residential schools are. It also holds Rajiv Gandhi Education City, which has changed what the block looks like.
Key areas for schools
Kundli
Right at the Delhi border next to Narela, and the shortest school run in Sonipat for a Delhi-side family. TDI International School in Sector 59, Max Merry School, Global Vision School and St Andrews World School serve the TDI and industrial townships. Campuses are newer than the city ones and almost entirely CBSE.
If you live in Narela, Bawana or the northern Rohini sectors, start here.
Bahalgarh and Khewra
The Meerut road running east from the NH-44 junction is the densest school corridor in the district outside the city, with around sixteen schools in five kilometres. Nutan Senior Secondary School, Sanskriti Senior Secondary School and Dev Rishi Vidya Niketan sit at Bahalgarh; Delhi Public School Khewra, New Tagore Senior Secondary School and Arya Vedic Senior Secondary School around Khewra; and GD Goenka International School a little further at Palri Kalan.
If you want a large campus or boarding, this is the stretch.
Rai and the Education City
Rajiv Gandhi Education City sits here, holding Ashoka University, SRM University Haryana, World University of Design, Dr B.R. Ambedkar National Law University and an IIT Delhi campus. Motilal Nehru School of Sports, set up by the Government of Haryana in 1973, is also at Rai.
Murthal and the village belt
Murthal carries Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology and the schools that have grown around it. Rathdhana, Jakholi, Safiabad, Nathupur and Sersa hold the more affordable Haryana Board and CBSE schools serving local families.
Which boards are available
CBSE runs the highway and boarding campuses almost without exception. The Haryana Board carries the village schools through Rathdhana, Safiabad and Jakholi, and remains the value option.
ICSE is effectively absent from the block, and there is no IB or IGCSE campus. Families who need an international board look to Delhi or Gurugram rather than anywhere in Sonipat.
Fee landscape
| Typical monthly fee | Best for | |
|---|---|---|
| Bahalgarh–Khewra corridor | ₹5,000–11,000+ | Large campuses, hostels, full senior secondary streams |
| Kundli | ₹1,750–11,000 | Shortest run from north-west Delhi, newer CBSE campuses |
| Murthal | ₹1,500–5,000 | Mid-range CBSE near the university belt |
| Village belt | Under ₹1,500 | Affordable Haryana Board schooling close to home |
Boarding is always billed separately from tuition, so ask for both figures before you compare two residential schools. Transport, books and activity charges are extra everywhere.
Getting to Rai schools
- NH-44 is the spine. Kundli, Rai, Bahalgarh and Murthal all sit on or just off it.
- The Bahalgarh–Meerut road runs east from the NH-44 junction past every school in the boarding corridor.
- The KMP and Eastern Peripheral expressways both begin at Kundli, which is why the industrial belt and its housing grew here first.
- The Delhi Metro Red Line is coming. The Rithala–Narela–Nathupur corridor, approved by the Union Cabinet in December 2024, extends it 26.5 km to Kundli across 21 elevated stations.
The upshot is practical. Kundli is already a shorter run from Narela or Bawana than a cross-town school inside Delhi, and once the metro opens those campuses sit directly on the Delhi network.
Why Rai for schools
- Delhi on the doorstep. Kundli is at the border, so a north-west Delhi family gets a bigger campus at a lower fee without a longer drive.
- The district's boarding capacity. GD Goenka International School and Delhi Public School Khewra are here, alongside Motilal Nehru School of Sports, a fully residential government school with a fifty-year record in sport.
- A university township in the block. Rajiv Gandhi Education City means senior students have real campuses, libraries and events within a short drive instead of a trip into Delhi.
- Room to grow. Unlike the built-out city, this belt still has land, and new campuses keep opening along the highway.
How admission works
Haryana has no points-based system, so each private school sets its own entry-class criteria and dates. The session starts in April, with forms mostly opening from December and admissions closing through February and March.
Two things run on their own calendar here. Motilal Nehru School of Sports admits mainly at Class 5 through a written test and a physical efficiency test, with limited lateral entry for outstanding sportspersons. The boarding schools on the Meerut road fill early, so apply well before the January rush.

A university township in the Rai block holding Ashoka University, SRM University Haryana, World University of Design, Dr B.R. Ambedkar National Law University and an IIT Delhi campus. It has drawn faculty families into the block and lifted demand for stronger schools along the NH-44 stretch.
